A domain name is your name on the web and it is the address your
customers will use to find your website. It is the part of your
web address that comes after the ‘www’, e.g. www.yourbusiness.com.au
and is also used after the "@" symbol in your email addresses,
e.g. yourname@yourbusiness.com.au
Therefore it is important to register a name the closely reflects
your business name and is easy for people to remember and type.
Individual brokers who do not have their own brands can use their
own personal names as the domain name, e.g. www.johnsmith.com.au
.
Once registered, the domain licence is entirely yours. No other
party can use that address. You will be provided a password or registry
key which provides access to the registration details and delegation
details. The network administrator is responsible for maintaining
the Domain Name System (DNS) database of hostnames and address information.
You can register multiple domain names and point them to your main
domain name. This is called "parking and pointing". For
example, people often register before the .com and .com.au versions
of their domain name and park and point the .com to the .com.au.
This prevents their competitors from getting a name close to their
own.
